Bit of a panic post. Surgery is booked for early November. Pre op assessment was last week and today the nurse rang to say my vitamin D is low and my iron is "on the low side" and they've asked my GP to start me on something for both.
She was very calm about it and said the date is "fine for now", but she said for now, and I've waited fourteen months to get here. Has this happened to anyone else? Did it delay you? And why does it matter so much when they're going to put me on vitamins for life afterwards anyway?
Iron is my specialist subject apparently (see every thread I've ever started). Mine was low before surgery too, they topped it up and I went ahead on the original date.
Why it matters, as it was explained to me: after a sleeve you can only eat small amounts, so it's much harder to fix a deficiency AFTER than before. Better to start the race with a full tank.
Vitamin D low is so common in the pre op lot that the nurse at mine said she'd be more surprised if it was normal. Most of us live in a grey country and don't get outside enough.
"Fine for now" to a nurse usually means "fine unless the next result is dreadful". Take what you're given, every day, and ask when they'll recheck.
Mine was the vitamin D one too. Tablets from the GP, rechecked six weeks later, never heard about it again. Didn't move my date.
Update for anyone who finds this later. GP started me on both the same week, recheck is booked for a fortnight before the op and the bariatric nurse has said the date stands unless that result is way off. She also said exactly what Tracey said, it's about going in topped up because it's harder to catch up afterwards.
Thanks all, panic level down from ten to about three.
